It is quite common to see many people suffering from the central nervous system disorder known as Fibromyalgia. This painful ailment has been under study for a long time now, as many are trying harder to figure out what causes it. Fortunately, all those studies have enabled the medical community to get a grasp of this disease and what causes it. In that context, we are referring to both the so-called 'underlying causes' and the 'triggers'. The improved understanding of the condition's causes has, in turn, made its management easier and more effective. We do have to mention that there are other causes of this disease, besides the three that we are just about to look at. These three major causes are exactly that: major. They are the most often spotted causes of the disease, as compared to the others.

As it turns out, the first major cause of fibromyalgia is stress. More often than not, stress triggers the various episodes of fibromyalgia. In many cases, even childhood stress is blamed for this type of condition happening. People who suffer from depression and stress are also eventually vulnerable to fibromyalgia. Children who suffered through depression and even abuse gravitate more towards the 'dark' are more prone to have fibromyalgia problems.

The second major cause of fibromyalgia is hormonal imbalance, and certain changes in brain biochemistry. Deficiency in the growth hormones is being touted as one of the more pervasive causes. There is, however, some disagreement in the medical community: with some experts postulating that the deficiency in growth hormone production may be as a result of, rather than the cause of, this particular disease. Turning to changes in brain biochemistry, the names of the usual suspects - serotonin and dopamine - come up. We are looking at a situation where too little serotonin can cause this particular disease. Dopamine, also known as hypodopaminergia, also causes fibromyalgia in pretty much the same manner. Too much stress would cause these neurotransmitters to have abnormalities when it comes to their amounts in the brain. But there is always the challenge of figuring out whether it is neurotransmitter abnormality that is causing the stress, or whether the stress is causing the neurotransmitter abnormality. We only know for sure that patients with fibromyalgia almost always suffer from these abnormalities in their neurotransmitters. But there are several medications that these patients could turn to in order to correct said abnormalities.

Having poor sleep will also bring about this condition. Studies have shown that sleep problems can indeed lead to the disease. The concept is simple enough: lack of sleep is closely intertwined with stress and the neurotransmitter abnormalities that we have discussed earlier. Poor sleep leads to stress and abnormalities which, in turn, leads to the condition. However, there are also certain cases where lack of sleep alone can lead to this disease.
